History

Hartnell Taylor Cook was founded in 1922 and remains an independent practice of commercial property consultants.

Hartnell Taylor Cook LLP commenced trading as a residential practice trading as Arthur Taylor & Co, in Clevedon, Somerset. The practice was purchased by Marcus Hartnell in 1945 and with his brother, Raymond and with Godfrey Cook, they expanded the estate agency business into Bristol, opening a number of outlets throughout the city.

In 1969, Marcus’s son, St John, established the commercial department with Graham Calver which quickly expanded into a successful service. St John Hartnell took over as senior partner in 1979 and with Graham Calver guided the business through a period of radical transformation in the 1980s with the opening of a London office (1982) and the sale of the residential agency section (1986) creating a nationwide practice specialising in all aspects of commercial property.

St John Hartnell retired in 2002 and under Andrew Batchelor’s leadership the business expanded with the opening of the Plymouth office in 2005 and the adoption of Limited Liability Partnership status in the same year.

In May 2008 John Rand became Managing Partner and he has expanded the practice further, introducing building consultancy, project management and residential development.

On 1 November 2013, Stuart Howell took over the role of Managing Partner from John Rand, who remains as Head of Professional Services.
